BENIGN PROSTATE ENLARGEMENT (BPH)

The prostate is a walnut-sized organ that sits below the bladder. The tube that drains the bladder (urethra) runs through the prostate and along your penis as you urinate. With prostate enlargement, this can cause compression of the urethra, and block the flow of urine.

Enlargement of the prostate is extremely common, with a prevalence of 40% in men above 50 years of age, and 70% in men above 70 years of age. Symptoms may include, a weak stream of urine, urinary urgency and waking up at night to void. This is different to prostate cancer, which does not cause symptoms unless it is very advanced.

What are the potential complications if left untreated?

If BPH is left untreated, you might experience the following:

  • Recurrent infections
  • Complete inability to pass urine
  • Bleeding in the urine
  • Kidney injury and failure
  • Bladder stones

Treatment options often depend on the severity and how much it impacts on your lifestyle. Dr. Ivan Aw will ask you a series of questions and come up with a personalised treatment plan for you.
