management of BPH

There are a few options that can be offered for BPH.

1. Lifestyle change

  • Optimise evening fluid intake
  • Create healthy bladder habits
  • Avoid triggers (caffeine) and adjusting your medications

2. Medications

Medications may help some patients to mild-moderate symptoms. Medications help to relax the smooth muscles around the prostate, and a combination of hormones may help to shrink the prostate over time. These medications should be taken continuously, as the symptoms will return if you stop them.

  • Alpha blockers (Silodosin, Prazosin, Tamsulosin)
    • This helps to relax the smooth muscles around the prostate. Beware of postural hypotension (dizziness, and risk of falls)
  • Combination of alpha blockers with hormones (Duodart)
    • Men should be mindful that this medication can cause sexual dysfunction, such as reduced libido, erections and ejaculate volume

3. Surgery

  • TURP
  • TUIP
  • Urolift
