Most kidney cancers are now detected by chance on imaging. When detected and treated at an early stage, there is an excellent prognosis.
Whilst the exact cause is unclear, smoking, high blood pressure, kidney impairment and certain hereditary conditions may be risk factors.
Are all kidney tumours cancerous?
No. Kidney tumours can be either benign or malignant. The larger the mass, the higher the chance that this will be cancer. We know that once the size reaches 4cm, more than 80% will be cancerous.
Whilst most benign tumours can be safely monitored, some benign tumours, such as AML (angiomyolipoma) may grow larger and spontaneously bleed.
Dr. Ivan Aw will discuss this risk with you and assess if you should undergo treatment.
